Drone swarm flight planner: How to "command" drone light shows?

The ever-shifting formations of drone displays in the night sky are by now a familiar sight to most of us. Yet how do such vast swarms of drones manage to perform so obediently and in such perfect unison?

Behind the scenes, this is the work of a new breed of "commanders": the drone swarm flight planners, who are also key witnesses to the rapid rise of the low-altitude economy. What does this new profession involve? What skills are required? And what are the career prospects like?

Drone swarm flight planner: "Multi-skilled" talent

In July 2025, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China released the seventh batch of new occupations, including 17 new occupations and 42 new job types, with "Drone Swarm Flight Planner" being among them.

A drone swarm flight planner might sound like someone who is mainly responsible for planning missions and designing paths to ensure a large number of drones do not collide with one another, but in fact, their work is quite complex.

From preliminary site surveys, creative design, flight path programming, risk assessment, and co-ordination with relevant government departments, to on-site environmental monitoring, simulation testing, dispatch and execution, and emergency response, and so on, the drone swarm flight planner plays a core role throughout the entire process.

Moreover, they also have to face unique challenges posed by the natural environment. Rain, wind, and magnetic field interference are all common problems faced by drones in flight.

Before each project is executed, environmental tests must be conducted, and in the face of special and sudden weather conditions, they must remain calm and composed to carry out emergency responses.

The complexity of the job also requires drone swarm flight planners to possess a wide range of skills.

Knowledge of drone-related structures and flight principles, programming skills, general knowledge of meteorology, and so on, are all essential for them; in addition, they not only need to understand technology but also have a certain aesthetic sense to ensure the visual effect of the drones' presentation in the air.

So, what kind of background do people who work in this new profession of drone swarm flight planning have?

Some of them originally worked in drone maintenance, some specialised in software development, and others were responsible for hardware research and development, but most of them have an engineering background.

This profession has relatively high requirements for the ability to learn systematised knowledge which also makes the salary and benefits for drone swarm flight planners much higher than those for traditional ordinary drone pilots.

Development prospects of drone swarm flight planners

Besides drone shows, there are now more and more scenarios that require drone swarm flight planners, for example, agricultural plant protection, forest fire prevention, material delivery, urban inspections, and so on.

For example, in the agricultural sector, drones can be used to efficiently spray pesticides over large areas of farmland. This is when drone swarm flight planners are needed to co-ordinate the work of multiple drones.

According to media report by China Central Television (CCTV), there is currently a talent gap of one million people in the field of drone operation. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology predicts that in the next five years, the number of drones in China will exceed 10 million, with 5 million used for commercial operations, which will create a huge demand for talent.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China's forecast, the market size of China's low-altitude economy is expected to reach 3.5 trillion RMB by 2035. As the low-altitude economy continues to develop, the new profession of drone swarm flight planner will see more opportunities.
